I may not be saving the planet . . .
But at least I'm saving some cash! We installed a programmable thermostat yesterday. The thermostat was under 50 bucks, and took about twenty minutes to install. Mostly, it took so long because my old thermostat was hooked up wrong, so there was an extra wire that confused me. As a bonus, with the old thermostat (presumably because it was hooked up wrong) our breaker box made the "zzzt!" sound everytime the heat kicked on. Now, the sound is gone! It's great!
Presumably, since we never adjusted the heat when we left for work or went to bed, the new thermostat will save a significant amount of money, since we went from running the heat 24/7 or only for about 8 hours a day during the week. I will get back to you.
In related news, they now make Compound Flourescent flood lights. We already switched out all of our bulbs for compound flourescents, but the flood lights in the kitchen were a problem (and they seem to burn out a *lot*.) We havent' actually put them in yet, we're waiting for a bulb to burn out, but I'm pretty excited!
Now, if I can just get my tankless hotwater heater, I should be set!

You might want to look into tankless water heater thing through your power company. I was looking locally here and I think it's against the rules to have them. I don't remember the exact reason, but after reading about them on the Progress Energy site or PSNC energy (I can't remember which)I was under the impression they were a no-no. Maybe things are different in your area, but something to think about!
there may be a difference between having a propane one or an electric one, too. Thanks for the heads up, though!
