Breed Specific Legislation

is WRONG. Dallas, Texas recently passed a law mandating all pets be altered and micro chipped, even pets that were "just visiting" the city. They also passed laws mandating the number of pets you are allowed to have. There is legislation pending in Pennsylvania and California that would make it a criminal act to even be in possession of a dog with a docked tail, docked ears, or dew toes that have been removed.

Some of these laws say that if you are even driving through a community with a certain breed, such as a dog that looks like a pit mix, it can be taken from you on the spot and destroyed.

There are several issues here, one, on a very basic level, this is a violation of my individual right to do what I want with my own dog, as long as I'm not abusing it. All of my dogs are spayed and micro-chipped, but if I don't want ot do that, why should I have to?

Second, there are legitimate medical issues involved in spay/neuter and microchipping. Many people choose not to have their pet altered because they think it is healthier, and these laws usually require having your pet altered incredibly young, rather than allowing you and your vet to make the best decision for you pet. Microchipping has been known to cause cancerous tumors at the chip site.

Democrats are being suckerd by organizations like the Humane Society of the United States (NOT affiliated with your local Humane Society!!) HSUS does NOT run a single shelter in the united states, and they are directly responsible for the death of many many pets. They are on record as wanting to end the ownership of animals in America. They would literally rather cats and dogs simply die off then we have them as pets, and that is their goal.

Like I said, Democrats are being suckered by these people. If you vote, particularly if you vote democrat, I encourage you to contact your congressman and presidential candidate and say you are AGAINST any legislation infringing on the rights of pet owners (NOT "pet guardians," blech) and against the HSUS, and you want them to come out as such, also.

HSUS is very good at hiding their agenda in legitimate pet cruelty issues, but don't be fooled. "Animal rights" is a shell game, animals do NOT have rights, they are animals. People have rights. Animals should not be treated cruelly, and people who do so should be put in jail, but these laws go well beyond the bounds of preventing animal cruelty. Don't let them take your right as a pet owner, and eventually your pet, away just because you have a soft heart.

I love my pets and they are members of my family, but I support animal welfare, not animal rights. I think responsible pet ownership should be encouraged and more information about things like spay and neuter and how they can actually help prevent problems like cancer and pet overpopulation down the road, as well as stiffer punishment for the owners of individual pets who have shown aggression instead of banning breeds. The problem starts with the owner, not the breed, and if someone were to come to my house to take away my dog because he looks like (and probably is) a pitt mix I don't know what I would do.

Although at the same time I have to admit the people that say they want to not spay their dog so they can have puppies and they'll give puppies to good homes.. I want to throttle them because as well meaning as they are they are still contributing to the problem because the puppies that they find good homes for mean that those people won't need to go to the shelter to adopt a puppy which means that more potential pets can never be adopted.

Sorry for hijacking your blog.

You're not hijacking, your totally right. I try to talk everyone I can think of into spaying and neutering their dog, it IS healthier for your pet and ANY puppies is part of the pet overpopulation problem, but any legislation interfering with the right of pet owners is one step down the road to them coming and getting your dog because it is "dangerous."

Also, keep in mind, in parts of the country they are trucking in dogs from Mexico to make the shelters full so that we think there is more of a problem than there is so that we will support mandatory spay neuter.

WHAT?!?!?! Excuse me! If I am just driving through they can just take my dog and destroy it (not that I have a dog, but if I did...)!!? Is it just me, or is that completely insane?

How about teaching a little pet ownership responsibility rather than imposing all these very strange and harsh laws?

Very interesting to know about the microchip. Lily was already microchipped when we got her from the rescue. Our vet keeps wanting to do it to Ginger, but something in me keeps saying no. Now I know why!

Yeah, I think the good outweighs the bad with chips, but everyone should make that decision for themselves! The tumors usually happen around the chip site, so keep an eye on wherever lily is chipped, if any funny lumps form, its obviously time to be concerned.

If you have what's considered a traditionally "dangerous" breed, even a mix, please be careful when you travel and try to find out what communities to avoid!

Blame the deed not the Breed.

Talk to your veterinarian and find out when the best time for your dog is to be spayed or neutered.

Educate your friends and family about bite prevention and dog legislation.

Support your local humane societies and rescue groups but don't support groups like HSUS and PETA whose goal it is to no longer have any domestic animals.

Make yourself familiar with all the amazing things dogs can do from Search and rescue, cancer detection, Military War dogs, therapy dogs, you name it, now imagine if mandatory spay neuter laws no longer allowed us to find the best possible dogs for these jobs...it will happen...it isn't a matter of if, only of when.

TRAIN your dog, pick up after your dog, love your dog, and remember that your dog is not a little pearson/fur-child.

MY DOG VOTES!
